In Massachusetts, Gateway Cities are midsize municipalities that anchor regional economies around the state. Gateway Cities have a relatively low median household income and rate of educational attainment. Most Gateway Cities have high foreign-born populations. With the decline of manufacturing across the United States, Gateway Cities experienced a decline in population, jobs and economic output. In 2008, the state’s official designation of Gateway Cities provided opportunities for these municipalities to receive public subsidies to shift their work force towards knowledge-based, economic models. Today, there are 26 designated Gateway Cities in Massachusetts. The Greater Gateways Initiative has worked in Malden, Chelsea, Everett, Quincy, the neighborhood of East Boston, Lowell, and Lynn.
